Open House
Home as Form
Open House invites the participant to explore both the space and the emotions of ‘home’, creating their own narrative through memory and judgement.
As an adult, you may experience this simply as a set to take photos, a box that frames the landscape. Possibly it will stir a deeper conversation about your experience with home. Whereas, a child may see this as a play set without walls, a building without a roof. Possibly a space that could become any house. The intention of this piece is to support and assist the imagination of the occupant, to offer the participant an opportunity to imagine with curiosity. A form providing a framework for the creative mind.
Questions & Ideas
Do we have an understanding of what ‘home’ is through form alone? How do our expectations and experience with ‘home’ change with age? What is the basic geometric and symbolic form of ‘home’? What canvas allows us to embrace play, and lets our imagination fill in the blanks?
Ideal Landscape
The work is best located in a tall grass environment, with a minimum of 100’ of empty space on all sides. Nature is encouraged to grow up around it, covering the base of the structure. One or more paths should lead to and from it, or, encouraging passage, through it.
Additional details
Garden and landscape space is also art space. The landscape itself should be the audience, the work should prioritize, and be driven by the land, more than the occasional art tourist. Although this proposal does not address that head on, it is an opportunity to move in that direction while continuing to work at a scale.
